The Great Coach

Over the years, I’ve had several coaches in both business and sport. Some better than others.

One of the best was Coach Vooletich.

He was a tough, gray haired, tobacco chewing coach at the university where I played football. He knew when, how far and in what way to push me to be my best. At times, he did so in a highly demanding way.

Coach Vooletich was able to push in this way because he had taken the time to grow our relationship. He gained my respect and let me see that he cared about me and our team.

I would've run through walls for him. He was a GREAT COACH!

What makes a great coach?

o   They care too much to let you “off the hook”. They won’t leave you blowing in the wind with no direction. They provide clarity of mission. They will call it like they see it. Good or bad.

o   They don’t fall into the trap of being your “buddy buddy”. They understand their purpose. They are here to get the best out of you, not be your friend, although they can become one. At times, this will take a tough conversation.

o   They know “dictating” to you will only get results for a short time. They understand that your buy-in to the process is key to exceptional long-term growth.

o   They find the ideal balance between relationship and demand. This balance comes from their integrity, honesty and genuine care for you as an individual.

Sadly, Coach Vooletich is no longer with us, but every so often, I hear his voice as I am thinking about a challenge.

A GREAT COACH has lasting impact!
